The heart of campus. Originally a military drill ground, now the central green space. Site of commencement, frisbee games, and the iconic campus view.
Fun facts
- •Building today's oval took 1927 to fall 1928: 27 acres graded to a 1 percent slope, with part of Stroubles Creek piped through a concrete culvert underneath.
- •It's also an FAA-recognized helipad for emergency landings.
Stories that happened here
- From Gobblers to HokiesFor most of a century Tech’s teams were the Gobblers. A coach changed that over a story about table manners.
- Rings, Ribbons and MoonlightEvery Tech class designs its own ring, old rings get melted into new ones, and juniors trade them on a ribbon at Ring Dance.
- Ut Prosim: That I May ServeA Latin motto from 1896, a spring Saturday when thousands of students say thank you, and four students who started their own ambulance service.
- Left Open ForeverThe Drillfield looks like it was always there. It was engineered: a creek valley piped, graded and promised to stay open. The creek comes back up at the Duck Pond.
